AstroPod by KALUMA was born from a commitment to sustainability and accessible design. Eco-friendly products often come with high price tags, limiting responsible choices to a select few. The goal was to create beautiful, sustainable lighting that remains affordable without compromising on quality or craftsmanship. After discovering an abundance of abandoned water pipes in Barcelona, extensive research led to the idea of transforming this waste into functional art.
Target Audience
KALUMA’s mission is to make sustainable design accessible to everyone. Inspired by the higher-end price range of IKEA, AstroPod offers responsible lighting at an affordable price point, enabling more people to make eco-conscious choices without breaking their budget.
Materials & Sustainability
82% of global PVC waste ends up in landfills, taking over 450 years to degrade and leaching harmful chemicals into the environment. By repurposing these materials, AstroPod not only reduces waste but also promotes a more circular approach to design.
Production Process
Every AstroPod is designed and handcrafted in KALUMA’s small Barcelona studio. Discarded water pipes are collected from landfilds, carefully selected, cut, and sanded to their final form. The 3D-printed components are made from recycled PLA, a biodegradable plastic chosen for its sustainability. Each lamp is then hand-painted, assembled, and finished, ensuring a unique, high-quality product.
Future Vision
AstroPod is just the beginning. KALUMA aims to expand into more lighting and furniture designs, continuing to transform Barcelona’s street waste into sustainable, innovative products.
